Pelosi Pushes Free Lunch   July 20th, 2009
Concerned that health care tax will be rejected by public if public thinks they have to pay

QUICK OBSERVATIONS

In a stunning example of Democrat Speaker Nancy Pelosi trying to push a "free lunch" agenda, Pelosi today said that she favors raising the "millionaire tax" to a higher income level to make sure people know it doesn't apply to them.

The speaker would like the trigger raised to $500,000 for individuals and $1 million for families, "so it's a millionaire's tax," she said. "When someone hears, '2,' they think, 'Oh, I could be there,' because they don't know the $280,000 is for one person.

"It sounds like you're in the neighborhood. So I just want to remove all doubt. You hear '$500,000 a year,' you think, 'My God, that's not me.'"

So in other words, Pelosi wants the general public to think that this expensive health care overhaul won't cost them a dime. She fears the possibility that Americans might think that it will cost them anything. She wants the public to think there is a free lunch. "Heck yeah, I want 'free' health care for everyone as long as I don't have to pay for it."

This is disgusting. There is no free lunch. Nothing's free. But Pelosi wants the public to think that everyone can have free health care at no pain to themselves.

This is the epitome of what's wrong with liberalism. It's class warfare, plain and simple. Make the "rich" (the ones that give us jobs) the enemy and generate support for soaking them to pay for everyone else's health care. And by proposing a higher income level to be subject to the tax, Pelosi tries to further hide the real cost to society.

But there is no free lunch and health care isn't free even if fewer people pay the taxes. It just hides the cost in terms of fewer investments, fewer new businesses, more businesses closing their doors, and fewer new jobs. A stunted recovery.

There is no free lunch and Pelosi's effort to hide the cost of her health care package by trying to give the vast majority a "free ride" is a disgusting disservice to the country.

The worst kind of tax is one the citizenry doesn't see--a stealth tax.

And that seems to be the hallmark of Democrat tax policies this year. Whether it be to proposing a "millionaire's tax" that is paid for by the general public in terms of a stunted recovery and fewer jobs, or a "cap and tax" bill that addresses climate change by increasing everyone's energy bills (due to a hidden tax that won't be disclosed on consumers' energy bills), the Democratic tax agenda this year amounts to new taxes for everyone... while trying to make sure the general public doesn't actually realize they're being taxed more.
